ABOUT THE PROJECT

PEOPLE

Oakland Schools

This project began in 2010 with Rebecca VanDeVoort's photographs of Oakland Unified middle schools ranked at the top and bottom of 2009 Base API reports. The API (Academic Performance Index) is perhaps the purest expression of standardized testing: it summarizes a school's test scores into a single number which ranges from 200 to 1,000. The statewide API goal is 800 for all schools. (API reports can be found here.)

We were interested in the physical locations of these schools. What they look like from the street. Through the fence. What might appear somewhere between test results and websites that rank schools and districts for potential home buyers. The vibrant murals. The Wells Fargo ATM machine that greets students at the front door.

This project continues in 2012 with the closure of 5 OUSD elementary schools.
