That dock that you see in the foreground is from the Boathouse, which was renovated as a restaurant “The Lake Chalet” and opened in August 2009. Now the older dock is anchored near the 12th street tidal canal. It is a perch to many seagulls, brown pelicans, and one blue heron who hangs out behind a decaying bench. The tidal canals straddle land fill which Samuel Merritt financed in order to increase the real estate value of the land and regulate tides in the late 1800s. The tides in Lake Merritt used to fluctuate 6.5 feet, but now only rise and fall half a foot.
